05. How to Prevent Product Build Up

Product build-up happens when styling or moisturizing products accumulate on the hair and scalp instead of being fully absorbed or washed away. Over time, this residue can make curls feel heavy, appear dull, and become more difficult to style. It can also block moisture from penetrating your strands, leaving hair dry and frizzy.

Keeping your curls clean and balanced is key to maintaining their natural health and bounce. Here are three simple ways to prevent product build-up:

1. Cleanse Regularly

Use a gentle cleansing wash or shampoo, such as Esteem Maison’s Cleansing. Cream at least once a week to remove product residue without stripping your hair’s natural oils. Washing your curls regularly will also ensure that the excess oils and dirt are being broken down, which will help keep you curls clean and free from build up.

2. Apply Product evenly & Rinse Thoroughly

When applying your products, make sure they’re distributed evenly from root to tip so every curl gets the nourishment it needs. Uneven application can leave some areas coated while others stay dry, leading to imbalance in your curls. Pro tip, use a wide tooth comb to help distribute product evenly while detangling your curls.

After washing, take your time to fully rinse out all cleansing products. Leftover residue can cling to your curls and scalp, making it harder for moisture and nutrients to penetrate. A thorough rinse helps keep your hair feeling light, clean, and refreshed.

3. Don’t over apply product

Using more product doesn’t always mean better results. Overapplying can weigh down your curls and make it harder for your hair to absorb moisture properly. Everyone’s curls are different so we recommend starting with a small amount, about the size of a quarter, then gradually adding more product as needed. This approach keeps your curls light, defined, and bouncy—without the heavy residue that can lead to build-up.
